january review

I’m so glad I started writing about my monthly goals.  I think the only reason I actually got some of these things done was because I put my goals out for all to see!

Here’s how I did on my January goals:

1.  Floss daily:  Yep!  I missed a few days, but in all, I’ve definitely developed the habit of flossing daily again.  I won’t write about this goal every month, because it’s pretty mundane, but I will certainly be continuing the habit.

2. Read 2 books:  I actually read 3.  The two I was planning (The Baby Book & The MILF Diet) as well as “My Child Won’t Eat!” by Carlos Gonzales.  I’ll write about this in Alma’s 12 month (!!!) update, but it is a great book for understanding your infant/toddler’s eating habits.

*This links to my amazon affiliate account, as do most amazon links on my site.

3. Plan Alma’s 1st birthday party:  Invitations are sent, menu is planned, decorations & cupcake stand are purchased, presents are purchased/made.  I wrote about my plans for Alma’s celebration in this post.

4. Stop eating sweets:  Pretty much!  We had one treat on New Year’s (a holiday, so it fits my ‘rules’!).  We also had a treat when we went out for a date night, but we decided that date nights were pretty much like holiday’s, since they only happen once a month!  Then we had one night where we had a moment of weakness, and had a cupcake.  Otherwise, I’ve drastically cut back on my sugar intake.  Some evenings, I still crave something sweet, but I’ve been mostly satisfied with a piece of fruit.

5. Try out a new schedule:  This didn’t happen so much.  I did try it out for a few weeks, but no matter how hard I try to get Alma on a schedule, she just doesn’t seem to fall into it.  Everyday is different, but we haven’t been having the 5:30am wake-ups lately, so in that sense, my goal was accomplished (but I don’t think I had anything to do with it!).  I’ll write more about this in her monthly update.

6. Hang up Alma’s wall art:  Yes!  I almost didn’t do this, but I wanted to be able to write that I did it!  Proof that making your goals public can help you accomplish them :)  I’m not super creative when it comes to home decor, but this beats having a bare wall.  And it flows with her tree.

sorry, this is a terrible photo

7. Hang up family photos:  Yes and no.  I did get the Prinstagram photos up.  I stapled some twine in rows on a frame I had laying around (much like my advent calendar), and clipped the photos on the twine.  I wanted to also print off some of our other family photos and frame them, but, as I predicted, I didn’t get to that this month.  It will definitely be on my list of goals for February!

8. Lose 5 pounds: Nope.  I lost 2.5 pounds.  Some of that was holiday pounds, though.  I also tracked some body measurements for the first time, and I lost 4 inches this month.  I will write a post partum update later in February, but I’m realizing that I probably need to lower my calorie intake, since I’m not producing a full milk supply anymore (less milk produced = less calories burned).

I also worked on some of my overall 2013 intentions: had a date night, planned meet ups with mama friends, got better (but not there yet) about not spending so much time on my phone, and started tracking our expenses on Mint.com again.

A pretty successful month!

168 hours

That’s how many hours we all have in one week, and it’s the title of the book I’m currently reading about time management by Laura Vanderkam.

I heard about the book through the healthy living blog Healthy Tipping Point.  You can read her posts about the book here and here.

I was interested in reading 168 hours because Andrew and I are working hard to figure out how to accomplish all of the things we want to do: personal time, couple time, family time, household duties, work time (for Andrew), and fitness time.  We are finding that we aren’t putting as much time as we’d like into a lot of those areas, so we are browsing ’168 Hours’ for some guidance.

The first step in the book is to track how you spend your time for at least one week.  You can track it any way you like – I used an app called 168 hours (which is not affiliated with the book, to my knowledge).

I like the app because you can set as many categories as you want (mine include baby care, exercise, household duties, internet browsing, blogging, reading, etc.).  When you start doing an activity that falls under a certain category, you just tap that category and the app starts tracking your time.  When you transition into a different activity, you tap the next category, and so on.  You can save your log at any point, and e-mail it to yourself, which gives you a detailed summary of what time of day and how long you engaged in certain activities.

Here’s a breakdown of how I spent my week, roughly:

  • Sleep: 55.5 hours
  • Time with Alma (baby care, outings, play): 46.7 hours
  • Personal Time (reading, journaling, personal care, time during naps, etc.): 34.3 hours
  • Housework (cooking/cleaning/errands): 16.6 hours
  • Time with Andrew (quality time when Alma is sleeping): 4.7 hours
  • Social activities: 4.5 hours
  • Exercise: 1.7 hours
  • Misc: 4 hours (these are the ‘lost’ hours – errors in tracking, etc.)

In a day, this works out to be (rounded) 8 hours of sleep, 6.75 hours caring for/playing with Alma, 5 hours of personal time, 2.25 hours of housework, 45 minutes of quality time with Andrew, 15 minutes of exercise (although I’ve actually been working out for 30 minutes 3-4 days a week), and the remainder is hard-to-categorize misc. time.

It’s been an illuminating experience to analyze how I’m spending my time.  I’ve realized a few key things after looking at a week’s worth of data:

  • I have more free time than I thought (when Alma naps well, that is)
  • I spend way too much time on the internet (it took up almost half of how I spend my personal time)
  • I spend less time taking care of Alma and the house than I thought (I think I overestimated it in my mind since I do little tasks all day long, making it feel like I’m constantly “on”)
  • I reallyreallyreally need to fit in more time for exercise

I plan on making a few changes to how I spend my time.  These include:

  • Less time on the internet.  More time reading/journaling.
  • Fit in one more 30 minute exercise slot.  Eventually, I want to work up to 30 minutes, 5x a week.
  • Find some more quality time with Andrew.  I’d like to bump up the quality time to average one hour a day.  Even if we can’t find some extra time together, I’ll take 15 minutes out of my personal time each day to write Andrew a love note, read about strengthening marriages, or journal about whatever challenges we may be working on.

Other than that, I’m pretty happy with the balance of my time.  Things will get tricky when I go back to school/work, so I want to make sure that I’m managing my time well now when I have less on my plate.  That way I can put good habits in place before our lives get busier.

The next part of the book involves making a list of 100 life goals, which I’m currently working on, so I’ll post some of those soon.  So far I’ve got 50!

fill in the blank friday

I’ve been looking for another link-up since I’m having fun doing the ‘Munchkin Meals‘ one.

I follow Lauren at ‘the little things we do‘ and she hosts a ‘fill in the blank friday’ link up.  I’m not sure if I’ll link up every Friday, but I’ll try it out when the mood strikes me :)

1.  Something I swore I’d never do, but have ended up doing anyway is letting Alma nurse to sleep everyday.  I don’t know why I thought I shouldn’t do it (rumors about creating bad habits maybe?).  It makes putting her down for naps such a breeze, and it seems like a very peaceful transition into sleep for Alma.

2.  Something I’ve always wanted to do is  live in a different city.  We won’t stay in Portland forever (although I do love this city!).

3.  Something I have absolutely no desire to ever do is get a PhD.  I’m excited to go back to school for my Master’s, but I have no desire to go beyond that.

4. The best thing I ever did was give birth (naturally with no interventions/pain medication).  It was such an amazing experience, and a true test of my ability to have confidence in and trust my body.

5. When it comes to trying new things, I am usually a little hesitant at first, but after thinking and planning about it for a little while I get really excited about new things.  Unless it’s something small, like trying a new food – then I’m usually game to just jump right in.

6. One thing I’ve never done is gone to Disneyland/world.  Andrew really wants to take Alma there, since he went a lot as a child.

7.  My favorite thing to do is spend time with Andrew and Alma.  They bring me so much happiness.  If I wasn’t spending time with them, I’d love to get lost in a good book while sipping on a hot drink.

Have a great weekend!

welcome!

I’m so excited to have a new home for vegan mama!

I wanted to take a minute to show you around the new site.

Top Menu

At the top of the page, you’ll find a menu very similar to the one on the old ‘vegan mama’ blog.  The menu contains pages for reoccurring topics.  I’ll continue to update each page with posts as they are created.

Right Sidebar

I will no longer be posting on the old ‘vegan mama’ blog, so if you’d like to stay subscribed to posts, you can do so with the options on the right sidebar. You can subscribe via rss feed or by entering your e-mail in the box to the right.

If you like to browse tag clouds, I’ve created one for this blog, and it too lives on the right sidebar.

You’ll also find my bio, blog roll, and my instagram feed here.

Footer

At the bottom of the page, in the footer, there is a search tool you can use if there is something particular you want to search the blog for.  You can also find recent comments, as well as the blog archive here.

Going Home

If you want to return to the homepage, you can select “HOME” from the top menu or click on the ‘vegan mama’ header.

I hope you enjoy the new look.  We have most of the major kinks worked out, but if you see something awry (a broken link, etc.) let me know!

My husband Andrew was such a huge help in the blog transfer – I most definitely could not have done it without him.  We have limited free time around here, and he spent a lot of his time on this for me.  (He also spent a lot of time listening to me complain about things that weren’t working.)  Thanks sweetie!

I can’t believe it’s July already!

3 years

Andrew and I celebrated our third wedding anniversary this week.  We had a lovely dinner at one of our favorite vegan restaurants, but I have to admit that the occasion was slightly overshadowed by the fact that we’ll be welcoming our first child in less than 5 1/2 weeks!  Even still, it was fun to reflect on the past 3 years of marriage.  Here are a few photos of our 4.5 total years together:

First dinner meeting my parents!  November 2007
Visiting family – March 2008
Engagement – June 2008
Vista House, The Gorge – September 2008
Engagement, Laurelhurst Park – October 2008
Engagement, Chinese Gardens – December 2008
Engagement, Chinese Gardens – December 2008
Wedding! December 20, 2008

Christmas 2009
Canada Trip – March 2010
My Graduation Party – April 2010
Thanksgiving 2010
Hiking – Forest Park/Pittock Mansion – March 2011

And sadly, that is the most recent picture we have together!  I tried to take a picture of us together using the timer on our camera, and failed miserably.  Hopefully when my parents come to visit next week, they will snap an updated photo of us (my step-mom Patricia is an amazing photographer – check out her work here ).

It has been an incredible three years of marriage, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to marry Andrew.  I am so excited to embark upon the journey of parenthood with him, and I’m looking forward to watching Andrew take on a new role in life:  daddy to our sweet baby girl.  I know he will be an amazing father because he is an amazing husband, and I’m the luckiest lady :)
Happy Anniversary, Love!

abc’s

Since I’ve been sidelined with a nasty cold this weekend, I’ll give you some random and probably useless information about me instead of a pregnancy update (finishing up week 17 here!). Gena’s blog reminded me of this.

The ABC’s of Me:

A. Age: 24.

B. Bed size: Queen.

C. Chore you dislike: Cleaning the shower.

D. Dogs: Don’t have one, probably never will.

E. Essential start to your day:
I’m not awake until I shower. Also, since becoming pregnant, I can’t even get out of bed before guzzling water and munching on some dry cereal.

F. Favorite colors: Purple, green.

G. Gold or silver: No preference.

H. Height: Just under 5’7’’

I. Instruments you play(ed): None, sadly. But I gave the recorder my very best try in 5th grade.

J. Job title: Birth-Three Teacher.

K. Kids: One in the oven! (I’m pretty sure it’s just one)

L. Live: Portland, OR

M. Mom’s name: Cynthia (bio), Patricia (step)

N. Nicknames: Kimmy (only children and select family members/friends are allowed to call me this)

O. Overnight hospital stays: None so far, but I have an upcoming stay late January/early February if all goes well.

P. Pet peeves: People who have long cell-phone conversations on the train/bus, being put on hold, walking behind someone who is smoking (and not getting to enjoy dining al fresco at restaurants because of smokers), waiting for a late train/bus.

Q. Quote from a movie: I thought about this for awhile, and I’ve got nothing.

R. Righty or lefty: Righty.

S. Siblings: One brother, four sisters (two bio, two step).

T. Time you wake up: Between 5:00 and 6:30am depending on my shift; around 8am on the weekends.

U. Underwear: I wear them.

V. Vegetables you don’t like: Eggplant, bok choy.

W. What makes you run late: Andrew :) Love you, babe. But usually, unreliable transit schedules.

X. X-rays you’ve had: Just dental, I think.

Y. Yummy food you make: Nothing that I’ve invented myself, but I’m pretty good at following recipes! Top favorites: tofu-ricotta manicotti, tempeh shepherdess pie (Veganomicon), and I make pretty good banana ice-cream concoctions (but that’s nearly infallible).

Z. Zoo animal you like:
Not a big fan of zoos, but animals in general? Elephants & tigers.

Also, you may disregard my last post – Andrew convinced me to find out the sex of our baby at our ultrasound in two weeks. We’ll share the news after we find out!

Hope you all are enjoying the weekend, free of head colds!

bulk shopping

Yesterday Andrew and I put our new grocery plan into action. It was sooooo nice to drive the zipcar to the store. We reserved the car for three hours, since we wanted to go to both Fred Meyer and Trader Joe’s. We were able to pick up one month’s worth of food and supplies in just that amount of time. It feels so great to know that for the rest of the month, our major grocery shopping is out of the way. It’s going to save us a couple hours each weekend. We were also able to purchase everything within the budget we set prior to shopping. After about five minutes of loading up the cart, I was sure we were going to go way over budget, but at the checkout I was pleasantly surprised! I also discovered that Trader Joe’s has a line of personal care and household products that are inexpensive and vegan. I picked up some face wash and lotion that would have cost me 3x the amount anywhere else, and I’m excited to try them out.

We have about $25 per week left in our grocery budget to spend at the farmer’s market to pick up random veggies, like onions and tomatoes, as well as fruit for snacks and our weekly loaf of Dave’s Killer Bread. I think this new plan is working out quite nicely! Meals this week include csa greens stir fry (chard + beet greens) with tempeh; peanut curry with bok choy, yellow carrots, and peas; black bean tostadas with guacamole; and spaghetti with a tofu-pesto sauce. I’m also going to whip up a batch of hummus to use on sandwiches for lunches.

This evening, Andrew and I are going to bike up to the Peninsula Park and Rose Garden to listen to the Portland Festival Symphony perform a free concert. Have a great Sunday!
